Sergeant Manuel E Mesa Guzman

Born in Havana, Cuba, on May 17, 1945, his parents were Manuel and Sara, both deceased.  He had three siblings, two sisters Isabel and Sara, and one brother, Jesuit priest Jose Luis Mesa Guzman, S.J., who works at St Augustine Center at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.

Manuel studied at the Colegio de Belen from third grade (1953) until 1960, when his parents left Cuba.  In Miami he attended Kinloch Park Junior High and Coral Gables High School, from which he graduated. 

In 1965 he entered the U.S. Army and was sent to Viet Nam in 1966. He distinguished himself and was made a Sergeant.  He was killed in combat on April 27, 1967.  He was 22 years old.  His remains are buried in Gainesville, FL.  He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star Medal for his bravery.

Nace en La Habana, Cuba el 17 de mayo de 1945; sus padres fueron Manuel y Sara, ambos ya fallecidos.  Tuvo dos hermanas, Isabel y Sara, y un hermano, el sacerdote jesuita Jose Luis Mesa Guzman, el cual ejerce su vocacion en el Centro San Agustin de la Universidad de Florida, Gainesville, Florida.

 Manuel estudio en el Colegio de Belen desde el tercer grado (1953) hasta 1960, cuando sus padres se marcharon de Cuba.  En Miami fue al colegio Kinloch Park Junior High y al Coral Gables High School, de donde se graduo.

 En 1965 se enlisto en el ejercito de los Estados Unidos y fue destacado a Viet Nam en el 1966.  Se distinguio y fue ascendido a sargento.  Murio en combate el 27 de abril de 1967 a la edad de 22 anos.  Fue sepultado en Gainesville Florida.  Postumamente, por su heroismo le fueron  otorgadas las condecoraciones Purple Heart y Silver Star.
