William J. Brennan, Jr. (1906-1997) served as a Colonel in the Army during WWII and a Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey from 1951-56.  He was appointed Associate Justice of United States Supreme Court by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956 and remained on the Supreme Court until retirement in 1990. Brennan authored the majority opinion in such landmark decisions as Baker v. Carr (1962) and New York Times v. Sullivan (1964).  Along with Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall, Brennan championed the liberal wing of the Court.
